Microneedling, also commonly referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure meant to promote collagen and elastin production in the skin. This is done to keep skin looking younger, firmer, and more supple. Microneedling is non-invasive, making it a popular choice for youthful-looking skin. We’ve put together a short guide about how micro-needling works, and why you should try it.
How Microneedling Works
Microneedling uses very tiny, sterilized, needles and will prick the skin over and over again. These tiny wounds will cause the body to generate more collagen and elastin as an automatic response to heal. The healed skin will look more youthful and firmer, and can even erase or minimize some imperfections in the skin.
Microneedling has been known to help with skin issues including, but not limited to:
- Acne and acne scarring
- Hair loss
- Dark spots or hyperpigmentation
- Oversized pores
- Sagging skin
- Stretch marks
- Damage from the sun
- Fine lines and wrinkles
Microneedling can be performed by both a dermatologist or an aesthetician, as well as anyone who is certified in performing the procedure. Always double-check anyone’s credentials if they are not a licensed dermatologist or aesthetician to ensure you are seeing an expert. The procedure generally takes 15-20 minutes, and a noticeable difference can often be seen within 4-6 visits.
A numbing cream will be applied to the skin first so that the tiny needle pricks are not felt. Then the person doing the procedure will use a rolling tool with the tiny needles and roll it across your face in different areas. Some small amounts of bleeding can occur, and there may sometimes be a lotion or serum applied after the procedure is done. Microneedling is most commonly done on the face, however, it can be done on other areas of the body as well.
Why You Should Try It
Microneedling is often much less expensive than other skin treatments such as botox, laser therapy, etc. Additionally, micro-needling does not take a long time and results can be seen rather quickly. The non-invasive, out-patient, aspects are also great benefits to micro-needling over other cosmetic procedures.
If you are frustrated with your skin not being as young and firm as it used to be but don’t want to break the bank or have weeks of healing, then micro-needling may be the perfect solution for you.
